Weak negative correlation examples8/12/2023 Describe how it is found and what it can be used for. B) An explanation of what a regression line is. For instance, when the coefficient has a positive sign, it means a positive correlation, and when the sign is negative, it means that the correlation is negative. The direction and strength of correlation can be determined using the sign of the correlation coefficient. This shows no correlation between the two variables. Suppose the prices of computers and coffee have been found to have a correlation coefficient of +0.008. When the correlation coefficient has a value of zero, the variables have no linear correlation, and when it approaches 1, the strength of correlation increases ( Duncan & Magnuson, 2012). Conversely, when the stocks move in the opposite direction, there is a negative correlation coefficient. The correlation coefficient helps determine the extent of correlation for example, when stocks move in the same direction, there is a positive correlation coefficient. However, when the scatter plots do not show any pattern, there is no correlation. When the two variables scatter along a given line of fit, there is a significantĬorrelation between the variables. Looking at the scatter plot, the extent and the direction of the scatter show how far the two correlated. The following graph shows the non-linear relationship between variables. For example, when the points lie in a smooth curve, the correlation is non-linear. Correlation can also be non-linear if the rate of change is not constant. A value of zero means there is no correlation between the two values. If the value is less than zero, there is a negative correlation. If the coefficient between the variables is greater than zero, there is a positive correlation. Figure 1: Linear positive, negative, and no correlation There are three types of correlation positive and negative correlation, linear and non-linear correlation, and simple and multiple correlations. In general, if a change in one variable leads to a change in a related variable, then there is a correlation between the variables. There can also be a correlation between weight and height. An example of correlation is when the demand for rice determines the price ( Guttman, 2019). A positive correlation shows the extent to which the variables decrease or increase in parallel, while a negative correlation indicates the extent to which one variable increases when another decrease. MA103 Basic Statistics - Correlation & Regression Project - Spring 2022 Due Date: PART 1 - EXPLANATION OF CONCEPTS A) Correlation is a statistical measure that determines to what extent two or more variables fluctuate in response to one another.
